This tutorial will guide you through connecting your devices to the dorms internet.

Every house is provided with 1 gigabit of internet. The houses central switch than splits this 1 gigabit amongst all rooms in the house dynamically. Galgenberg does not have its own public IP and is using a CG Nat.

¶ Setting up your Internet
In this section you will get an in depth tutorial for setting up your internet.
To connect youself to the internet over WiFi you need a router.

¶ Step 1: Buying the right Router
To connect to the internet you need to buy a WAN Router. Choose one from the list or do your own research.

However, any modern router that advertises LAN-functionality should be fine. You can get decent ones starting at around 30 Euros from companies like TP-Link, Fritz!Box, GliNet etc.
Now that you bought your router you need to connect it to the Wall Port.
¶ Step 2: Finding the Wall Port
Every room has a WAN Outlet somewhere on the wall. It looks something like this.

To connect your device/router to the port first remove the small transparend cover on the WAN Outlet. Due to the tight tolerances on the WAN Port you might not be able to plug in your LAN Cable. In this case remove the cover completely by twisting it.
Now connect your LAN Cable to the left WAN Port. Don't have a LAN Cable? Buy one on Amazon, Media Markt or another store of your choice. Make sure your LAN Cable clicks when being inserted. This ensures the locking mechanism engaged and is a sign that the cable has been connected correctly. Now connect the other side of the LAN Cable to your device/router. It's important you plug it into the correct port on the router. Consult the manual or plug it into the port labelled "WAN"
Your device/router should now be connected to the network. If you use a router you might need to do an initial setup for the internet to work.
Make sure your device is using DHCP to automatically get its IP-Address. If you do not know what DHCP is you shall not worry as most devices use DHCP per default.
¶ Step 3: Setting up the Router
How you setup your router depends heavily on what router you bought. For further information read the packaging or consult the manual for the router you bought. The manual can often be found online.
The general process for a TP-Link router often looks like this:
- Check your manual for your routers default SSID (the name of the WiFi access point) and the password.
- Connect your phone/laptop to the routers WiFi.
- Open your browser and open 192.168.0.1 if you have a TP-Link router.
- Log in to the routers web interface.
- Follow the steps on the web interface.
¶ Internet Problems
Check with friends to see if their internet is working. Should their internet work you most likely have a problem with your device/router. Try the following steps first.
- Restart your router. Sometimes it is necessary to keep the router unplugged for a few minutes.
- Make sure all cables are connected correctly and are plugged in all the way. Listen for the click when pluggin in a LAN cable. Your LAN cable should be connected to the LEFT PORT of the WAN OUTLET in your room.
- Make sure the router has been setup. Consult Step 3: Setting up the Router
- Check that your device uses DHCP to automatically get its IP-Address.
- If Websites are slow to load please try changing your DNS-Server to Cloudflare. Try this tutorial.

- What kind of router should I buy?

All routers support sending out signals at a frequency of 2.4Ghz which allows for data transfers at ca. 100Mbit/s. 2.4GHz can also penetrate walls and has good range. Newer standards offer 5GHz which can reach much higher speed but my be stopped by walls, metal pipes and other stuff (but will work fine in one room). Even newer standards like Wifi 7 offer 6GHz which offers the same features and drawbacks as 5GHz, just more of them. Also, not many devices support 6GHz, so there's less interference. - Can we use just one router per apartement?
Sure! - Do I need a router that supports fiber since we have fiber?
No, the fiber doesn't go into your apartement, it gets converted to regular copper wire beforehand. - How fast should the internet be?
Each house should get 1Gbit/s to share among the apartements. If many residents use it at the same time it might get slower. If you're using Wifi over 2.4GHz you'll only get around 100Mbit/s
This router is the bare minimum. It will allow you to connect to the internet and do for example access WueCampus but you should not use this for Gaming. For faster Internet speeds and better WiFi strength don't buy this one. ↩︎
